Indian mackerel commonly occur in Indian, West Pacific and surrounding seas. They are known to undertake lengthy long-shore migrations, but permanent resident populations also seem to exist. They usually hunt solitary and often swim in shallow water along coastal slopes. Found in small schools and feed primarily on small fishes like anchovies, clupeids, carangids, also squids and penaeoid shrimps. Eggs and larvae are pelagic. Reports of ciguatera poisoning
